JUNE 12: THE NEW DEMOCRACY DAY
Today at the Eagle square in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja Nigeria, the first Democracy day after the rectified date from May 29 was celebrated by the Buhari led administration with a public holiday declared. The current administration decided to change the Democracy day from the official swearing-in ceremony day which is May 29 since the return to Democratic rule to June 12 in honor of the acclaimed winner of the 1993 Presidential election Bashorun MKO Abiola whose elections was controversially annulled by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida.(rtd)
There seems to be divergent views from Nigerians concerning the honor being bestowed on Abiola( last year Buhari post humously honored Abiola with GCFR and his deputy with a GCON title) these titles are reserved for a current or Past President and Vice President respectively. While many welcomed the initiative and feel he deserves to be recognized and celebrated and these people mainly are persons from the South West region who are the kinsmen to Abiola.Other views posits that the whole noise about June 12 and MKO was not called for since he was never officially declared the winner of that election. The undisputable truth is that Chief Abiola died in prison because he became a "thorn in the flesh" of the military who held sway. It's been alleged that he was killed by the powers that be to shut him up permanently and he also his wife Alhaja Kudirat Abiola who was shot dead because of the prominent role she played during her husband's incarceration and demands of restoring his electoral victory. The man MKO Abiola deserves to be honored no doubt about that but I just hope that this gesture of the Buhari led administration is done with sincerity and not a Greek gift of some sort.
The Goodluck Jonathan government sometime ago in 2012 wanted to rename the prestigious citadel of learning University of Lagos Akoka to MKO ABIOLA University but was met with serious rejection from Abiola's kinsmen who almost felt it was an aberration of some sort but today the same people are celebrating today because the National Stadium Abuja was renamed MKO Abiola stadium. One wonders if it was less dignifying to rename UNILAG to MKO Abiola University than a Stadium, be that as it may we congratulate the family for this honor bestowed on their patriarch and pray that God continues to console and comfort them.
Twenty- six(26) years after the annulment what has been the fate of Nigeria and Nigerians,is the current administration led by Buhari doing enough to give us the Nigeria of our dreams?.While we celebrate June 12 from now on as the official Democracy day the administration in power should work assiduously to provide Nigerians with the dividends of Democracy we yearn.
