CORRUPTION(PT 1):FINANCIAL CRIMES IN NIGERIA
Financial crimes are crimes committed against property, involving the unlawful conversion of the ownership of property(belonging one person) to one's own personal use and benefit.
Examples of Financial Crimes include but not restricted to Cyber crimes(eg Yahoo yahoo in the local parlance), Money laundering(Political class), Embezzlement(Companies/Organizations), Counterfeiting, Fraud, Extortion, Identity theft, Tax evasion, Forgery, Terrorist financing etc
All over the world financial crimes seems to be on a gradual and steady increase, from the developed economies like US,Britain etc to growing economies like Uganda,Nigeria etc the story is the same, although the consequences of financial crimes is felt more in African Countries because our leaders here feel more comfortable stealing from the coffers of government than the developed countries where the system have been programmed to deal decisively with culprits.
Nigeria like most third world nations have suffered a lot from this, political leaders are more interested in filling their pockets than actually making life better for the electorates. Financial form of corruption has become endemic and is gradually festering like an ulcer, agencies set up to prosecute individuals have become a tool in the hands of government to disturb perceived enemies. Organizations and companies have also been targeted by employees, Personal Bank accounts have been hacked and millions siphoned from them.
This trend of hacking into accounts whether personal or companies etc to steal money under any guise is wrong and should be totally condemned. Unemployed youths have resorted to Cyber crime(Yahoo yahoo) to perpetrate this evil, there is no justification whatsoever for this. Evil is evil, crime is crime no matter who commits it.Poverty and hunger should never turn us into people without conscience and feelings.
Whether as a politician or an unemployed person or even a company staff we should never resort to any form of financial crime just so we can provide for our families and live lavishly. Many innocent persons have lost their lives as a result of any "successful" financial crime. The monies stolen by the political class can be used in several ways to better the life of the common man, the monies "successfully" gotten from any "Mugu/Maga" is another life thrown into depression or frustrated which can lead to suicide. "A penny earned genuinely is worth more than any million ill-gotten"
Government agencies like EFCC,ICPC etc set up to investigate, prosecute and jail financial crime culprits should be impartial and fair as they discharge their duties. Every suspect should be treated equally and no form of class discrimination should be seen in the course of investigations. Judges and lawyers should equally help by making sure that justice is truly served to act as a deterrent and every form of delay tactics employed by the accused should be suppressed by all means.
JUST MUSING🤔
