THE WORKER DESERVES HIS WAGES!
Today 1st May world wide is the International Labor Day, it is a day set aside by member countries to remember the contributions of the worker in the both Public and Private Sector.Nigerian Labour Congress were not left out as usual, with the various Unions of every sector represented in the March pass organized every year at the Eagle square in Abuja and various state capitals in Nigeria. Successive governments every year make promises to these workers but fulfilling those promises is another kettle of fish, just recently in Nigeria a new minimum wage was signed into law from #18,000 to #30,000. The new wage which shows an increment of about #12,000 has no significant effect on the quality of life for the average Nigerian Worker. This is because of the state of the Nigerian economy which seems to have nose dived in the past couple of years.Analystis believe that the #30,000 is not best that the present administration of President Buhari could offer to the Nigerian Worker, some believe that the paucity of funds being used as an excuse to reward poorly the Nigerian Worker is fallacy because the political class have allocated huge sums of money to themselves for doing absolutely nothing.
Some pundits even thought that Buhari who campaigned in 2015 with a lot of promises to sanitize the system and cut down drastically on cost of governance has done little or nothing to prove to those who believed in him then that he is different from the average Nigerian politician.
The condition of some civil servants in most states of the Federation is nothing to write home about, with some resorting to suicide instead of facing their loved ones languish due to penury with some states owing more than 4months salary arrears and some as high as 14months etc the worst hit are the Pensioners who after serving meritoriously end up dying without receiving their pension and gratuity. Some Pensioners have been reported to have collapsed while waiting for unending verification process, this treatment shouldn't be the reward for service to Father Land.
As we join the World to Mark this year's May Day,we hope that the government of the day will improve on the welfare of the Nigerian Worker/Retiree and the political class must be willing to make sacrifices to better the lot of the Nigerian Worker even if it means cutting down on some of their frivolous expenses so that every Worker will always have reasons to put in their best which will in turn increase productivity on all spheres. Governors of various states must look inward and find alternative means to fund their state's budget instead of relying solely on the Federal Allocation to pay salaries and carry out capital projects. Every state of Nigeria is blessed with abundant mineral deposits and other things which can be harnessed to increase IGR(Internally Generated Revenue).
The Bible frowns at owing any labourer his/her wages and likens it to an abomination of some sorts. The Nigerian Worker deserves to be treated with dignity and respect and not be subjected to situations/circumstances that will make them regret spending their youthful years in service to a Nation that doesn't appreciate their sacrifices.
As we begin a new month today we appreciate God for the privilege to start a new month and ask for the grace to succeed in all our endeavors and equally pray for protection and provision in the Jesus name Amen
