MOTHER HOOD IN THE 21ST CENTURY
The role of Mothers in the family especially with regards to nurturing their offsprings can never be overemphasized. The dictionary definition of the word MOTHER just calls her A FEMALE PARENT and this doesn't do justice to her role.
Motherhood is much more than mere bringing forth a child into the world. For some individuals this is just what being a Mother means to them,but Motherhood goes beyond that. There are no words to describe a Mother but we can try to use some words to express how our Mothers have impacted our lives. Stories about the sacrificial love of Mothers are found throughout history from the Bible times down to our present century. In the Bible for instance we remember the role Moses's mother played to save his life from the instruction of Pharaoh to kill any Hebrew baby son born to the Hebrew women,even his foster Mother Pharaoh's daughter equally played a very significant role in his upbringing.We also recall the role of Eunice and Lois(mother and grandmother) in the life of Timothy,so much so that Paul mentioned their names in the Bible. Time will fail me to start reeling out the list of great Men and Women whose success today is as a result of sacrifice of Love made by their Mothers.The foremost African American neurologist Ben Carson is a modern day product of a Mother's love.
Sadly in recent years stories of supposed Mothers causing bodily and psychological harm to their biological or adopted children seems to be rising. We hear about Mothers who choose to kill their innocent and harmless children/wards so that they keep their boyfriends happy. Some even allow their kids to be sexually molested by their lovers who incidentally in most cases aren't the Fathers of these kids.Two recent stories on the Internet caused goosebumps and sent shivers down my spine and as well as other well meaning individuals. The first story is about a "mother" who was pimping out teenage daughters to men for money with one of the girls as little as 9years,but she was arrested when her daughters raised the alarm.The second is the case of another "mother"chose to buy her teenage girls contraceptives to prevent pregnancy as a result of constant Rape from their biological father,so instead of reporting to the authorities or even taking them away from their beastly father she decided to stand by and watch him destroy these girls.
The above stories is a few out of many cases of mothers doing absolutely despicable things,even mothers who encourage their young children and wards to be lazy,lack of respect for others,steal,lie,fight, engage in sexual promiscuity etc. I wonder if such women think about the kind of adults such children would become,because children naturally see their parents as their role models and such would think that those things are allowed by the society.
As Mothers day was marked recently this is a call to every woman( already a Mom/potential Mom) to brace up and play the part that the Maker has so intelligently assigned to them. Even when biology says you can't have children of your own, you could still assist in raising the children around you,just by correcting and advising them.The world today seems to be gradually sliding into self destruct mode because Parents/Guardians(Mothers) have failed in their roles.Morals and Values which held the society and made Evil remain Evil is today being destroyed by Mothers who aren't contented with what they have who encourage their children to make money in a very wrong way. As we remember the sacrifices made by Mothers we must not fail to make the clarion call to Mothers making negative impacts on their children to desist from such.The future of humanity lies with the young children today,we as Mothers must bequeath our children with character that will build the society rather than destroy it. We must never restrict training to our biological children,every child irrespective of race,sex,nationality,Religion etc belongs to every woman so treat/train that child the way you would love your children to be treated in your absence.
Motherhood isn't just birthing a child,it includes good nurturing,attention to detail and counselling.May God bless every Mother and give the physical and psychological strength to discharge our duties in our homes and to the society in Jesus name Amen
